Where is the lion's share of R&D tax credit and relief going?
In April 2019 HMRC updated Research and Development tax relief/credit tables showing statistics for claims in 2016-17. Find out what sectors and regions got the greatest share of SME R&D tax credit and relief.
We've compiled the tables for Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Research & Development tax credit claims to give you a quick view of where the funding is going.
Here are a few key stats for SME R&D tax credit claims:
- Based on head office locations London based Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) made most claims - 6,545, followed by the South East region at 5,245 and North West at 3,840.
- The amount of funding going to London was also greatest at £485m, followed by the SE at £330m and the North West at £160m.
- The largest share per industry sector, per region also went to London - £200m for the Information & Communication sector, followed by £120m for the Professional, Scientific & Technical sector.
- The Manufacturing sector had the second highest number of claims at 8,270 and the third highest value at £390m with the West Midlands and South East regions sharing the greatest number of manufacturing sector claims at 1,070 each.
